Satisfactory Academic Progress
All University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM) students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to receive federal financial assistance. Failure to do so can result in the cancellation of aid awarded.
Federal Aid Annual Review
In compliance with federal financial aid regulations, the UMMSM requires satisfactory progress towards the MD degree as an eligibility requirement for federal financial assistance.
This policy is applicable to all medical students receiving financial aid through federal sources, e.g, Direct Stafford Loan, Direct Plus Loan, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Work Study.
At the end of each academic year, the Office of Financial Assistance reviews the academic progress of all UMMSM financial aid recipients.
To maintain satisfactory academic progress, students must achieve both a required satisfactory grade and complete a minimum number of credit hours. Students are required to maintain a satisfactory grade as outlined in the Promotion Requirements.
If it is determined that a student is not making satisfactory academic progress at the end of the academic year, a notification is sent to the student. The student will be placed on financial aid suspension. Notification will be sent to the student detailing information on the appeal process.
Medical students must be enrolled at least half time in order to receive federal financial assistance. Half time enrollment status for a medical student is constituted by at least four credits.
A student must earn 100% of the total credits attempted at the end of each academic year to meet academic progress.
Withdrawals, incompletes, audits and Fs are not considered earned credits. All courses with a grade of F, I, W-P, W-F and repeated courses will be considered in the calculation of credit hours attempted and will be subject to satisfactory academic progress. Audited courses are not considered in awarding financial aid; therefore, they will not be counted in the determination of satisfactory academic progress. Incomplete (I) grades will be calculated as failing grades in regard to credit hour completion until the course has been satisfactorily completed.

Maximum Time Frame
All UMMSM students must complete all academic work within six years of the time of admission excluding Leaves of Absence (LOA).
Reinstatement of Financial Aid Eligibility
A student may regain eligibility by:
- Achieving the required satisfactory grade and credit hour completion as outlined.
- Appealing the financial aid decision as described below.
How to Appeal
All medical students who do not meet satisfactory academic progress requirements and are able to document extenuating circumstances may appeal the suspension or termination of financial aid eligibility. To appeal, a student must:
- Submit, in writing, an explanation as to why he/she was unable to meet or maintain the academic progress requirements.
- Submit all documentation that substantiates the student’s mitigating circumstances, such as a letter from a doctor, medical bills, etc.
The appeal and all supporting documentation must be submitted to the Office of Financial Assistance no later than 30 calendar days from notice of ineligibility. Decisions are made based upon the information provided by the student and a review of the student’s academic record. All decisions made by the Appeal Committee are final. Notification of the decision will be sent to the student via e-mail.
