Merit scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence throughout their undergraduate career. Students who have attained high grade point average and/or MCAT score are considered for merit scholarships at the time they are admitted to medical school. UMMSM notifies students as soon as possible when they have been selected to receive a merit scholarship.

The UMMSM values diversity and strives to admit and retain a student body that reflects the community that it serves. Furthermore, the School of Medicine recognizes its obligation to train physicians that are skilled in cultural competence who can meet the demands of an increasingly diverse society. To that end, the UMMSM provides a number of diversity scholarships to students who have demonstrated a diversity of life experiences or a commitment to cultural competence. To be considered for a diversity scholarship, students who have been admitted to the School of Medicine must complete the FAFSA and an online application (alternate link for the online application can be found here).

The UMMSM strives to assist those students with significant financial need by providing need-based grants.
