Costs and Financial Assistance

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine provides financial support and a wide range of services to assist students in meeting the cost of obtaining a high quality medical education. More than 80% of our current students receive some type of financial aid, in the form of scholarships or loans. Fifty three students in the class starting the Fall of 2007 were awarded institutional scholarships. In academic year 2006-07 the total amount of aid awarded to UMMSM students exceeded $24 million.

Applying for admission to UMMSM automatically places you in consideration for merit-based scholarships. Students can also apply for other types of institutional scholarships, including need-based and diversity scholarships. In addition, the School of Medicine participates in federal, state and private loan programs. A number of students receive health professions scholarships from the U.S. Armed Forces and the National Health Service Corps.

We believe that the high cost of obtaining a medical education should never interfere with one’s dream of becoming a physician. We know that a well-informed and educated borrower can make the intelligent choices needed to limit debt and avoid financial hardship.

It is the mission of the Office of Student Financial Assistance to ensure that all students receive the most advantageous source of funding available to complete their medical education and to provide the necessary resources to effectively manage their student loan obligation in the future.

We strive to be equitable and sensitive, to offer professional and courteous service, and to facilitate the process for timely delivery of aid. We also sponsor group sessions on debt management. Please feel free to stop in to our office any time with your questions!
