Funding Opportunities
Funding opportunities for medical students interested in pursuing research and/or other professional activities remains somewhat limited.
Many students are successful in applying to and obtaining positions in UMMSM research labs that may have independent sources of revenue that can fund student work. This varies by opportunity.
Other students are able to secure positions in extramural activities that are also funded. Students are also encouraged, if interested in full-year-off activities, to apply to the well-funded programs such as the HHMI, NIH.
For students seeking funding for activities that are not independently supported, the OPDCG provides the following information, and encourages students to explore the following options:
·Maria-Valero Martinez
Office of Research Administration
Coordinator, Research and Training

·John K. Robinson Scholarship
Offered through the office of Medical Alumni Development

·Individual departments at UMMSM may have grants that have a student component for small stipends, but students most often are on a volunteer basis in their research settings
Other Year One activities include:
·Introduction to Advanced Clinical Experience (ACE) Program.
·Interest Group Participation.
·Workshop on Summer-Off Activities.

UMMSM Career Advising Program
Our UMMSM Career Advising Program strives to provide our medical students with resources, links, and specific career advising information.
We incorporate the AAMC Careers in Medicine program and website tool, which also provides general career advising information for all medical students.
The "four-phase"approach corresponds to the decision-making stages we suggest for all of our students.
