An Important Message From
The Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Department

Dear Students,

Welcome to Medical Biochemistry at the Miller School of Medicine. Medical Biochemistry is
one of two sections of the MBL (Molecular Basis of Life) module which is taught as the second
module of the freshman year. In our experience, entering medical students have widely different
backgrounds in biochemistry. Therefore, there will be many of you who may already have a
sound footing in basic biochemistry while others may have very little prior exposure to this
subject. This situation appears to be unique to biochemistry since most of the other subjects
taught in the medical curriculum will be entirely new to everyone. To ensure that everyone startS
the course with some basic knowledge of biochemistry, we strongly encourage you to prepare by
reviewing the subject in:
Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry, 4th Edition (2007) by P.C. Champe, and R.C.
Harvey.
As a preview of what to expect in the course, you may also like to look at last year’s material.
You can do this by navigating the Biochemistry contents of the Molecular Basis of Life module
that can be found on the Medical Education website (http://www.mededu.miami.edu/MedEd).
Once at the Medical Education website, find the section titled "Archived Curriculum
Information". Under the sub-section "2006-2007 Academic Year", click on the link "UM Online
Schedule 2006-2007". From there, you can navigate through the Freshman curriculum and look
for Molecular Basis of Life and the Biochemistry contents. The interface brings together links to
the presentation materials and videos of the relevant lectures. Access to the Medical Education
website's resources requires a username and password that will be provided to incoming students
by the Office of Admissions.

With this recommended preparation in mind, we will assume a sufficient prior knowledge on
your part to enable us to review the fundamentals only briefly before proceeding into protein
structure, biological catalysis, bioenergetics, metabolism and its regulation, and intracellular
signaling, with emphasis on aspects relevant to disease processes.

We look forward to meeting you.

Rudolf Werner, Ph.D.
Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Course Coordinator, Biochemistry Module, Molecular Basis of Life
